The Best Salami Ever

Ben had a program at the end of the year to celebrate all that they had learned in kindergarten.  There was a play and many songs and they also recited a program.  About a week before Ben came home in a really bad mood.  Mom fished around for a long time and he said that he didn't get to be narrator in the play.  Apparently it was the only part he wanted and they raised their hand when they wanted a certain part.  A couple of other kids were selected to be narrators and Ben decided he wouldn't raise his hand for any other part.  So it came to the very last part and he was the only one left.  He wouldn't raise his hand, but had been assigned the part of "salami".  After a while, Mom figured out that he was one of many foods in The Hungry Caterpillar.  He said - "I don't even know what salami is!"  Mom showed him pictures and somewhere along the way promised to make salami pizza.  Mom checked out the frozen pizzas during her next store trip just to see what was there and sure enough there was a salami pizza!  Mom also noticed that the pizza had banana peppers and red peppers but decided that it would be exciting anyway.  Ben was excited, but it turned out there was no way to thoroughly get rid of the pepper oils and heat on the pizza.  It was a bust, but Ben was coming around about being salami.

The program was fantastic!  They read the story and as each food or part was mentioned the appropriate kid stood up for their turn in the spotlight.  Ben was "eaten" by the caterpillar on Saturday in the story and didn't put up a fuss over his part.  Then they recited a poem and Ben got to recite one of the months and what they learned that month.  He read really well and beamed with pride.  They also sang and then we all got to watch a video with pictures from their year.  It was super sweet and we are sorry for this fun to be over, but excited for first grade adventures in the fall!
