Recital Day

Elizabeth had dress rehearsal the morning of her recital.  It was Mom's only practice run at French braids.  It went okay, although there was lots of fake crying and squeezing Dad's hands for dear life.  The hair got done though and we even convinced E that Ms. Jane asked her to wear a small amount of makeup and she would need to comply.  She did and then decided it was beautiful so she was cool with it.  Rehearsal went till around noon and then she was home to eat, nap and get ready for recital.  Round two on the hair didn't go as well.  It wasn't as tight because E was squirming and crying too much.  Good enough - it would be fine under her head pieces.

E was super excited for us to see her on the big stage.  Her first number was called "Friends" and she did her tap number.  The way the recital was arranged had about four classes on stage at a time and each class would come to the front to dance one class at a time while the other classes watched from their poses in the background.  This sounded like a recipe for disaster, but Mom was amazed at how still E stood during the other girls' turns.  She even helped lead her line to its place and helped smaller girls off and on stage.  Who was this girl?  Elizabeth did so well!  She attempted all of the steps and seemed to get to the correct place each time they moved.  Success!  Her second number was after intermission.  During this time, Mom stuffed Ben with candy in attempt to bribe him to be as good during the second half as he was in the first.  He actually seemed to do well and looked for people he knew in the program.  He especially liked watching the kindergarten class where he knew several girls.

Elizabeth's second act was part of a jungle scene - she was a flamingo!  This costume could not have been better selected for her.  It was pink, fluffy and the head piece even had pink feathers.  Wow!  She did well again and then had a very small trip on a step when she went back to her spot on the steps.  Mom panicked thinking that this could be a turning point.  If she had seen any of us, she probably would have been in a heap on the floor crying.  But instead, she hopped right up, looked around quickly and got on her spot.  She put her smile back on and recovered.  Woo hoo!

After the recital, Mom went back to the stage door to pick her up.  Then we met up with all of the family to give her flowers and a stuffed animal.  She was shocked that she got presents and was almost more eager to show us the candy that Ms. Jane had given her.  Overwhelmed by the attention, we didn't really get any pictures afterward.  Her "boyfriend" from school was even there as his sister takes lessons and she wouldn't go say hello to him either.

When we got home, Dad asked E who had done her hair.  Mom thought Dad had lost his mind and forgotten the trials that were the braids.  Mom then looked and said "Yes, who did your hair?"  It was the neatest, tightest braids you could imagine.  E said that Ms. Katrina had done them since they were loose.  Mom asked if she cried and E said "Oh no!  It didn't hurt at all!"  And now we know the key to braiding E's hair - have someone else do it!

The next day she went on and on about all of the things she would do at next year's recital.  Every day for at least a week, E has asked "Is it dance day?"  And every day she is disappointed that she won't have class until next September.  In the meantime she dances everywhere she goes and talks about dance every chance she gets!
