The Zoo and Ben's Scare

Ben's class had a zoo trip in April with the 1st grade class at Jenks Southeast.  It was a nice sunny day and Mom was able to go and be a "safari guide" for the day.  Ben's group had four kids - two boys and two girls.  They were all excited to see everything, but ended up more excited about the playground than the animals by the time lunch rolled around.  We persevered and saw most of everything and didn't lose any of the kids.  Success!  We also avoided any allergy scares which was a huge relief to Mom who had to carry an epipen for one of the friends in Ben's group.  Whew!

Ben was hot and tired that afternoon and was pretty tame at dinner time.  He was feeling fine, but he was drained from the big day at the zoo.  The next day was not what any of us anticipated.  Mom didn't have her phone on and missed a couple of calls from school.  Dad finally got through and said he was on his way to school and I needed to be on standby.  Ben had passed out on the way to the library.  He was conscious, but woozy.  What?!?  Mom went ahead and got in the car to head that way while she was waiting for a call from Dad with more details.  God is so good and in His perfect timing, Mom was working on a memory verse from Isaiah that was fitting.  That verse was recited nearly a million times between downtown and the doctor's office.  Isaiah 41:10 - "Do not fear for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."  In the midst of these words, Mom had heard that Ben was still woozy and almost passed out on the way to the car.  Off to see Dr. Le!  We love our pediatrician and she was able to get us in right away.  It was comforting to have a familiar face help us figure out what was wrong and determine if we needed to seek additional treatment.  Ben was pale, but still trying his best to be polite.  He was trying to sit up and talk to the staff even though we were trying to keep him laying flat.  He even invented a new word to describe how he felt - waltzy.  Like when your body just wants to dance, but you didn't plan to.  They ran blood panels and took all of his vitals.  He was "normal".  His sodium was mildly low, but not dangerous enough to need IV fluids.  Mom proceeded to diagnose him with dehydration anyway.  :)  He had not had much to drink at the zoo and it was hot and he had not had anything to drink that morning.  The doctor  listed other things it "might" be, but they were not life threatening and unlikely enough that they weren't going to investigate further unless it continued to happen.  We "medicated" with rest and lots of Gatorade.

Ben was able to return to school the next day with several Gatorades in his backpack.  He felt a little "waltzy" off and on for a couple of days, but never fainted again.  Eventually, he was back to normal and didn't even miss a soccer game or anything.  He did milk the situation for a while and was able to drink Gatorade in class whenever he wanted for several weeks.  His sweet teacher did not want it happening again and was eager to give him whatever he needed to feel well.  Praise God it didn't turn out to be anything serious!
