There is no doubt that Ben is a sports fan. Yes, he has been influenced by Dad some, but the kid really just loves to watch sports. He loves the action, he loves the rules, he loves the stats. He has not met a sport yet that he doesn't like. His favorite team is Kansas due to the brainwashing that has occurred from birth. And at first he would pretend to cheer for Kansas even when it was two completely different teams playing. Now he has advanced though and always chooses who he is cheering for and has a reason as to why that team has been selected. He cannot watch a game "just because". He follows teams in every league imaginable and when those teams aren't playing he will cheer for whoever he likes next or whoever might help his team in the rankings.
Recently, he went on a play date and was having a great time. But he overheard a basketball game in the living room that the dad was watching. He slipped out of the playroom and sat down with the dad to watch the game. They let him watch a few minutes, but tried to encourage more play. So at half time they changed the channel to golf. Ben's response - Well, I don't like it as much, but I do like to watch golf too. 2nd attempt: NASCAR. Maybe this will bore Ben back to the play room. Ben's response - Oh, I like NASCAR and sat back down. So they graciously turned off all sports and play resumed.
He had previously shown this passion for any and every sport when he craned his neck at a restaurant to see the TV that was playing bowling. We don't watch bowling at home. He doesn't know anyone's name. But he needed to pick who he was rooting for and couldn't keep his eyes off of it.
He was also the only kid that sat through the entire Superbowl at a party while all of the other kids played and ran around. Go Giants!
He can quickly learn the lingo, rules, players, stats, etc of just about anything he watches. And he remembers these things too which is going to be so much fun during March Madness this year when he is able to keep up with the various teams and star players. He is blessed with this gene from Dad. :)
And if the regular sports watching isn't intense enough, don't get between him and a KU basketball game. The last game he watched was KU/MU. It had hardly started and he was asking to be reminded of which conference MU was moving to and was talking about how this was the last time we would play together in the Big 12. He was especially stressed because we had lost at MU earlier in the season and he knew how much was riding on this game as a Jayhawk fan. His cheeks were bright red within minutes and he literally could not sit still. He fretted over who got into bonus/double bonus first, which players missed shots and who was getting fouled. We were watching delayed on DVR and the game went into overtime. Mom had only recorded so far past the allotted time. As the end drew near, not only was KU looking like they were losing, but Mom could see the timing was not going to work out. The game was not going to be over before the DVR had stopped recording. Double disaster! We ended up missing the last play that decided the game, but were able to find the score online and at least be happy that the Jayhawks won. One of Mom's friends was able to save the day with a recording through the end of the game so he was later able to see the final seconds and celebrations. It is going to be a stressful Big 12 and NCAA tournament this year. Ben and Dad may have to watch in separate rooms so they don't stress each other out! :)
We cannot wait to see how this develops. It is so much fun to see these passions begin and flourish. Just wait till the Summer Olympics!
