Learning Potty Humor (Consider Yourself Warned)

This is a conversation that occurred on the way home from school this week.

Mom: How was your day?

Ben: I started.

Mom: What?

Ben: I started.

Mom: No, I meant, "You started what?"

Ben: My bottom.

Mom: What are you talking about? I am confused.

Ben: I started my bottom.

Mom (now proceeding cautiously with the repeat of "bottom"): I'm not sure I understand what you are talking about.

Ben (laughing): I started, Mom! It means tooting.

Mom (trying not to react too much, but discourage): Oh, I don't need to hear about that. What letter are you studying this week?

Great, so Ben is starting to learn less desirable words but is either not hearing the other kids correctly or the other kids don't have a clue either. On an unrelated but similar note, one of the teachers reported that the little boys were really getting creative with their rhyming. Guess we have lots to look forward to!
And please, please, don't ask Ben about "starting" if you see him. He doesn't need any encouragement. :) But you will at least know what he is talking about if he blesses you with this topic of conversation.

Ben's First Game

During the pep rally on Friday, Dad was out scouting for losers leaving the other Friday games. We felt bad, but we were doing them a favor by taking the tickets off their hands, right? So we ended up with three tickets to Sunday’s games. We told Ben if he acted like a big kid all weekend we would take him to the game on Sunday. It was a struggle, but the closer to game time it got, the better Ben’s efforts were to go. He even did extra chores to “earn” his ticket. The game times were not the best for a four year old, but we persevered and started with another pep rally at 4pm, knowing that tipoff for Kansas wasn’t until nearly 8pm that night. It was a long day, but Ben did so well! A huge thanks to Grandma Lyn and Grandpa David for keeping Miss Ellie! She will get her turn someday, but is at least a year or two away from this kind of adventure.

Ben enjoyed the pep rally okay, but it was far more crowded than Friday, so he was definitely ready to head over to the Texas/Arizona game. He told us he would not choose a team to cheer for, since Kansas wasn’t playing. We convinced him that it was okay to cheer for another team since Kansas wasn’t playing them and he decided to cheer for Texas with us. He tried his best to learn the cheers and mascots of these “new” teams and enjoyed himself watching the score and screaming for the Longhorns. It also gave him the chance to learn a little more about a live game. He had never seen certain parts of the game on TV due to commercials so he was very interested in the time outs and cheer performances. He kept asking when the players would “get those tiny chairs out to take a break”. He also acclimated quite well to all of the buzzers and noises. He was worried going into it that the buzzer would really bother him after his experience with practice, but he did just fine. He got to enjoy cheese nachos and Dippin’ Dots during the first game and thought that was pretty awesome. He could probably live off of concession food if we’d let him. We were sad for the Texas fans that the game ended the way it did. Ben even tried to switch teams he was cheering for in the last minutes as he “wanted to win”, but stuck it out with us and was crushed when Texas lost. He was a little dumbfounded with how they had lost in the last couple of plays and started to worry that Kansas could potentially have the same heartbreak. That is the excitement of March and part of being a basketball fan!

During the break between games we made Ben take a break and walk around. He was doing a quick study on the other team though and wanted to race back to his seat as not to miss anything. The Fighting Illini’s mascot was retired a few years back due to controversy, so they didn’t have a mascot at the game. Ben was baffled that a school would have a team, but not have a man in a costume. He told us that “if they don’t have a man in costume, then they just can’t win”. This would be one of many justifications as to why KU would win.

Ben kept track of Baby Jay the whole time and was thrilled to better learn our players’ names. He wouldn’t always get them right or call the right player the right name, but they sure got praised and scolded by him. His favorite one to say was Markieff and he often got lots of nice comments from Ben. Ben’s favorite player was still “Number Zero” though and he was so excited to see Thomas Robinson on the court. Ben’s favorite thing to yell overall was “Don’t let Illinois win!” He told us that he “was yelling it so it would get in the player’s heads and they would do it.” A close second was yelling, “Defense!” He loved to yell that any time we didn't have the ball. At the very end, he added “Encore!” to his repertoire out of nowhere, but then leaned over and asked, “What does that word mean?” We were just thankful that we had a bunch of friendly well behaved fans around us and that is the only new word he heard that night.

We tried to have many lessons about good sportsmanship and not cheering against the other team or booing, but that was sometimes a hard sell. Part way through the game Ben heard the man next to us clapping at the “wrong time”. We explained that he was cheering for Illinois and that lots of people liked that team too. Ben gave the man the dirtiest look and kept whispering in his direction that he wouldn’t win. Yikes! We have a little superfan on our hands! Later on the man talked to Ben and was very sweet to him. Ben was polite back, but still wasn’t sure how everyone there wasn’t cheering for KU.

The game got very close and Ben kept asking “how far ahead” KU was after every basket. He studied the scoreboard for a long time and was baffled where Mom was getting this “ahead” number every time. Mom explained that it wasn’t on the scoreboard, but was a math problem and you had to look at both numbers and find the difference. That was very exciting to Ben and he was very pleased that Mom was helping him with this information. We are totally training a future nerd! This information made Ben frantic though when the game was close and he was not happy that the difference wasn’t more (he gets that from Dad and his grandparents!). Thankfully, KU pulled ahead and ended up winning by a comfortable margin. The Rock Chalk chant started in the crowd and Ben joined right in. You could tell that he was thrilled all of his “practicing” had paid off so he could participate in this moment. His little excited smile was just priceless!

We talked more to our “new Illinois friends” before leaving and Ben was sure to tell them politely that his team had won (in case they had missed that announcement). Some social etiquette to work on! He was also befriended by a toddler behind us that wanted to touch Ben’s crazy hair and a Kansas fan in front of us that had grandsons Ben’s age and was very impressed he had lasted so long for the game.

It was a fun weekend for us and hopefully it will be a memory that lasts with Ben. He cannot wait until the next game (after he realized that we didn’t already win the championship) and plans to cheer so loud that they will hear him in Texas next week. Brainwashed? Nah!

Rock Chalk!!

March Madness Begins

Ben sort of watched the Big 12 Championship game with us, but wasn’t super interested. We tried to sell Selection Sunday as a special event and he got so interested that he was very mad it didn’t mean an actual game would be on. Oops! Guess we didn’t explain it too well. Who would have thought there would be a show just to talk about games that hadn’t happened yet and wouldn’t for almost a week? :)

Tulsa hosted eight teams this year for the first rounds and it was the closest place for KU so that is where they played. The teams had practices on Thursday and our family got to go watch Kansas. Ben was thrilled with seeing the players so close and loved their crazy shots and dunks. His new favorite is “that crazy Number Zero” (Thomas Robinson) that did some great wild shots. Ben decided that Grandma and Grandpa would let him stay to watch all of the teams. As KU finished the horn sounded as it would at the end of a game and Ben quickly changed his mind and asked how many more times that horn would sound. It was a bit loud and it was dinner time anyway.

Friday was the first game and Kansas played in the evening. We didn't have tickets and Ben was very disappointed, but we planned to watch at home as Grandma Elaine and Grandpa Larry were in town for the evening on their way to Dallas. That afternoon before the game though, there was a party and pep rally for Kansas that we took the kids to. Ben got to meet Baby Jay, high five him and sit in his lap. He was so excited! Elizabeth thought that Baby Jay was Barney for some reason and kept yelling, “No, no, Barney!” as loud as she could at him. Not a fan! (Yet.)

The band and cheerleaders were there and performed. Ben tolerated the volume well, but E had to take walks outside of the room for a while. She was far more interested in the inflatable Jayhawks (there were three in all) and wanted to pet them. We would get close to them and she would literally smack them as hard as she could and yell “I pet it!” She struggles with the word Jayhawk and says it more like Jake-hawk. But, she even does a version of the Rock Chalk chant now that is pretty great!

There had been tons of free game gear at the party before the pep rally and the kids now have all sorts of Jayhawk stuff. They have foam Jayhawks for their hands, wild red and blue hair, pom poms, stretchy bands and all sorts of stickers. It is a regular party at our house now. We got to wear all of the new stuff at home for the game Friday night. Ben was revved up after the pep rally and wanted to “show the players what to do” by pretending to dribble and make wild shots. His tips paid off and the Jayhawks ended up with a win.

St. Patrick's Day

Ben’s class started the week off with some sneaky leprechauns disrupting the classroom and making messes. This led to a long discussion about if these were people in costumes, little creatures or what? Unfortunately for Grandpa David and Grandma Lyn, they took the brunt of the paranoia as Ben checked every tree and every room for leprechauns while visiting their house that day. Luckily though their explanations alleviated most of the concerns and Ben was able to somewhat enjoy the rest of the week as the leprechaun tricks and stories continued. Ben believes they are people that want to dress up and play tricks on other people. When Ben’s teacher put out a tiny box to try to catch one, Ben argued with her that it would never work as no person in a costume would ever fit in that box. :) His mind is so logical!

Ben and Mom made rainbow cupcakes in anticipation of the big day. Mom thought it would be a fun way to learn about mixing colors and this fabulous experience. After coloring and layering seven layers, it was decided this might be a "once in a lifetime" experience never to be repeated. Hopefully Ben enjoyed it some.

The kids had special green treats on St. Patrick’s Day and both wore their lucky green shirts. Elizabeth was mad that she didn’t get to choose her own shirt that day, so we compromised and let her choose her pants. She chose light pink pants that had stains and didn’t match at all, but she got to wear them as we are in the middle of blossoming independence and it wasn’t worth a second battle that morning. Ha ha! Ben was concerned that he needed to wear green head to toe like a leprechaun. He didn’t have green shorts so Dad convinced him that wearing green underwear under his khaki shorts would be just as good. As we got to school that morning Ben felt the need to share this with everyone and justify the khaki shorts he was wearing by pulling the band of his underwear out to show that he really had green on under his shorts.

The sneaky leprechauns left Ben’s class some special treats that afternoon and they brought home necklaces and gold lucky coins. Ben is very pleased with his treasures and hopefully we can not worry with leprechauns until next year.

Elmo Time

We took the kids to see Elmo this weekend. Elizabeth thinks Elmo is pretty great right now, so we wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. We thought Ben would be excited as well and were looking forward to telling them we were going. A few days before, we drove by the BOK Center and Ben asked if we could go there soon. Mom told him we in fact could and before she could finish, Ben replied "only if it isn't Elmo." What? You used to love Elmo. You know that Elizabeth loves Elmo. . . we waited a bit and told them later that day that we were actually going to see Elmo. Ben protested briefly. His logic was sound as usual - Elizabeth likes Elmo and I'm not going. We let it go and sure enough a day later he started asking about it. Would there be enough room to dance like a superstar near our seats? Of course! Would we have to sit by strangers? No, Mommy and Daddy will get that job. After all of the important questions were answered, we were back in business!

Elizabeth was scared when the lights first went off, but after things started going she was rocking out and climbing into other people's rows. She loved seeing Elmo and gang so close (but not too close).

Ben also enjoyed the show. He claimed his favorite part was the popcorn, but the stories he told to friends and family later confirmed that he went to a "crazy show where Elmo got super powers and saved Grover" and it was "really cool".

Mom's favorite part was when we first sat down and Ben asked, "didn't we sit over there last time?" Ben pointed to the area where we sat two years ago when he was two and a half. How he remembered that, who knows, but it was fun to know it stuck with him at least for now.

Bedtime Prayers

Here is a list of a few of the items that Ben has been praying for in the last week. It was too sweet not to share.

  • Please don’t let our family or anyone we know get cavities.
  • Please heal my scratch and dry elbows.
  • Please remind me that You are near when I feel scared. (Ben was feeling scared at bedtime and Mom told him to pray that God remind him that God is always with Ben and that God will protect him. This led to the conversation of how God can be everywhere. Ben’s theory is that there is only one God, but that God has a special machine that makes other smaller versions of Him that help Him out and then report back to Him like God robots. Interesting theory! That is a tough concept to get, but we’ll keep at it!)
  • Please take care of Sarah’s belly. (Ben’s aunt is expecting this summer and Ben loves to talk about and pray for his cousin.)

Fun First Weekend in March

The kids started the weekend with art projects on Friday night. Elizabeth decorated a shamrock for school and Ben had a giant dinosaur themed project that is still in progress. Ben had also made a huge discovery at school that day that he loves beef and cheese tacos. “It is like a giant chip wrapped around only meat and cheese!” Most families wouldn’t think much of this, but we were thrilled to add this to our list of meals that we can all enjoy.

Saturday morning the kids both got haircuts. It is only E’s second haircut so it is still a new thing for us. She did fair and they both enjoyed treats when they were done. After a trip to the grocery store we headed home to watch KU play Missouri (men’s basketball). Ben sometimes watches games, but he was totally in the mood to watch every minute of this one. He jumped around and cheered loudly at the TV the whole time. I think that came with the genes! We took a break during half time for naps and resumed the game when the kids woke up. After we finished up the game it was time to head to the bowling alley for a surprise birthday party for one of our good friends. Ben was so excited to bowl and did such a great job. He also discovered that he loves cheesy breadsticks since they are like a skinny pizza! Go figure. We ate, bowled, caught up with old friends and enjoyed a few arcade games. Dad won the kids a light up bouncy ball that is quite the prized toy at our house right now.

Sunday morning was a new schedule at church and Mom got to help with the kids’ worship time. It is also fairly new for us that Elizabeth goes to kids’ church with Ben now and it is really fun to see both of them learning and doing the activities together. Ben is very protective of her and often announces that she is "already two" and whatever new thing she is doing. The weather was a little cool, but very nice so we were able to play outside for a while after nap time. Ben really wanted to bowl again, but was satisfied with going for a bike ride and playing outside instead. We ended the evening with spaghetti and meatballs, a call to Grandma and Grandpa and the Imagination Movers concert on TV. You can’t beat that in the eyes of a four-year-old and Elizabeth was more than happy to enjoy all of the above right next to “brudder”. As we were trying to wind the weekend down, requests were made for more biking, more bowling, the aquarium, and a train ride. Mom told Ben that we would get our calendars out this week and start making plans. It might be a busy spring if Ben plans it.

Potty Training

Mom got a call from school a couple of weeks ago and usually that is never good news. This time it was. E’s teachers thought she was ready to potty train and wanted to put her in underwear. We went out that night and bought Dora and Elmo panties. She has tried really hard and we have had lots of successes as well as some accidents. But overall she is really excited and becoming very consistent. This could be a bright future ahead when we get to ditch the diaper bag!

Valentine's Day

Both kids enjoyed Valentine’s Day this year with parties at school and lots of treats!! They are both still enjoying their mailboxes at home and looking at their valentines from their friends. Here are a few pictures of their fun and the special dinner that Mom made them. Ha ha!

Ben and his friend, Ella, decorating cookies at Sage. Ben enjoyed piping the frosting high into "snowmen".

The final products

E enjoying snacks with friends

Ben after scarfing down his party food

A blurry shot, but wanted to show off our fancy dinner of cheese and hot dogs. After Mom worked to put these together, Ben refused to eat these parts that were cut off and not a normal straight line. He ended up eating a regular hot dog. It was a nice thought at least!
